Memorial Day weekend is upon us and it marks the “unofficial” start to summer. The kids in Minneota have started their summer vacation even though it hasn’t felt like it. While the past week of cold and rain has made most of us put summer on the back burner, it’s almost here. There are so many great events to look forward to during the summer. One of my favorite all-time summer activities is going to dairy cattle and rabbit shows.

It can be a lot of fun, and a nerve racking to take the animals you’ve been carefully monitoring to their first show of the season or their first show in general.

On Saturday, I have 10 little rabbits that were born this spring that will get their first taste of competition. They are young, so I am just hoping that they behave themselves.

We’ve had a great group of calves to choose from this summer and my siblings have been filling up the weekends with places to show them off. One of the best parts of going to these shows is all the people that you meet. With most of those people, summer is the only time of the year that you see them.

For a lot of people, the socializing is more important than showing animals. After a cold rainy snap like this, warm sunny days are the best.

Spending time outdoors during the summer is something I look forward to especially during blizzards in the winter. The long days and warm nights are perfect for bonfires and so much more. The tastes of summer are also one of the best parts. Grilling burgers and hot dogs, watermelon, potato and macaroni salads are some of the all-time classics.

I would be remiss if I forgot about ice cream! Sundaes, cones, ice cream sandwiches, popsicles, and everything in between are perfect ways to cool down during the summer. AND June is National Dairy Month and July is National Ice Cream so that is two months dedicated to celebrate ice cream.

Another popular pastime during the summer is taking road trips. Whether you are going on a family vacation, heading to the lake, checking out a Twins game or hitting the wedding circuit, summer road trips are inevitable.

When I was in college, I rode out to the South Dakota Badlands with my roommate Chelsea. It was 95 degrees everyday that weekend and once we hit Huron on the way there, the air conditioner in her car broke. We stopped for ice often because that was one steamy ride that I don’t ever want to do again, but it does make a fun summer memory.

Baseball is a timeless summer tradition. Whether it’s summer recreation baseball, Legion ball, the local amateur team or even the pros, there is plenty of baseball to check out during the summer. Somehow, someway, the Twins are off to a great start this season. My friend Andy is a huge Twins fan and we joke regularly that the Twins need us. On more than one occasion, when we have watched a game together the Twins have won each time.

We bought tickets for a Saturday night game against Cleveland and I’m hoping that the Twins won’t let us down and keep swinging away in the American League Central.
