Don’t miss it, stop and look around

Life moves pretty fast.

If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Those famous words from 1986’s blockbuster hit Ferris Bueller’s Day Off have been associated with coming of age, specifically being a senior in high school, like Ferris was in the movie.

Fast forward to 2017 and high school seniors today still enjoy living it up and being the top dogs in the school. Some of you may have seen an interesting looking couch on the north end of the football field by the student section.

You may have been wondering what the story behind it is. My brother Gared is a senior this year and he and his friends had an interesting idea on how to show their team spirit.

Because they’ve dealt with nasty football and wrestling injuries, the guys decided to sit in the stands this year instead of being on the field. Gared and Riley Yost felt that the bleachers were to “mainstream” for them.

One day in late August, I was feeding calves and I stumbled upon their “big idea.” Riley had an old green couch that they decided to build large wooden legs for. I was skeptical at first, but then I thought it was really neat.

They actually measured to see how high the couch would need to be in order to see over the fence at the football field.

After a little crafting, they built their own stadium seating which has been making others green with envy at football games this season.

Gared and his friends haul it in to every game and I believe they even took it to the Canby game. So where do the boys keep it when it’s not game time?

When I arrived after halftime during the Lakeview game, Gared and the boys had already given up their special seating and some younger fans snatched it up.

I had to laugh, because when the seniors and younger fans got off the couch, it looked like they sat on a cat! That’s right, the glorious green couch is enjoyed by some of our farm cats during the week and it’s just a tad hairy.

But, I’m glad that the kids have found a way to show their school spirit.

Ferris Bueller was probably talking about big picture things when he said, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it,” I think that it’s safe to say he’d want the seniors to enjoy their senior year and maybe, just maybe, watch out for the cat hair on the couch.
