What is fun? Amusing, enjoyable, entertaining

What is fun?

Is it going to a party with friends?

Is it going to the Minnesota Renaissance Festival?

Is fun putting pineapple on pizza?

The dictionary definition of fun is, “what provides amusement or enjoyment; specifically playful often boisterous action or speech full of fun; and a mood for finding or making amusement.”

This weekend, I went to a very nice wedding for some friends of mine.

Towards the end of the night, I was ready to call it a night. I was told by as I was leaving to the car instead of the dance floor, “You don’t know how to have fun!”

“Excuse me,” I thought, “I am a very fun person!” So, that got me thinking, what exactly is “fun”?

The type of “fun” that person was having didn’t sound too fun to me anymore. I am a huge fan of walking straight and not feeling terrible from “adult beverages.”

I think that “what is fun” is different for everybody. Some of the things that I find fun other people would probably think are not even close to fun. For example, I think getting up super early to drive up to hours away to show rabbits and cattle is fun. Showing is a lot of work, but it is a lot of fun!

Something else that I think is a lot of fun is feeding animals, twice a day, everyday. I love feeding baby calves, even on the days that are challenging.

Sure feeding calves in the winter when it’s cold and dark or in the summer when it’s so humid and the mosquitoes won’t stop biting does stink, taking care of the calves is still fun.

My best friend is an ag teacher and he thinks most days of teaching are a lot of fun.

That sounds dreadful to me but that’s why he’s a teacher and not me. His students tell him that he is a “fun” teacher.

I asked him why. He thinks it’s because it’s he’s “cool”. I think it’s because he has a very hands-on teaching approach, doesn’t assign too much homework (because he doesn’t like to grade papers) and that he isn’t the most strict teacher in the school.

I suppose it goes back to my theory that what is fun for everybody is a little different. We all know people that we characterize as fun and others we characterise as not so fun, or boring.

So what makes us categorize them as such? Is it their interests? Is it the types of activities or hobbies they are involved in?

Or are they categorized based on what someone else’s opinions? It’s just something interesting to think about.

I don’t think there are any right or wrong answers because everyone’s preferences are different.

However, you can’t judge a book by it’s cover and people may surprise you. Even the types of pets that people have are often associated with how “fun” they are.

Most people tend to think people with dogs as pets are the most fun, while cat people are thought of as being more uptight. Besides dogs, cats, rabbits, cows, goats and chickens, I also have a pet fish. My sister thinks fish as pets are lame.

My brother Grady and I both think having a Beta fish is kind of fun because they are such chill pets. I know people that with snakes and I think they are crazy.

To some, they may be viewed as fun. I guess it takes all kinds.

I think that the definition of “fun” needs an addition.

It needs to say something like, “what is deemed amusing, enjoyable, entertaining or pleasurable depends on what each individual or group believes to be true.”

Fun means something different to everyone.
