It was a rainy night at Target Field.

Have you ever wondered about rain delays?

Have you ever watched a baseball game in person or on T.V. to watch it get called off or delayed because of rain?

I’m sure that you have. Games get delayed for rain often. Have you ever wondered what the fans and people at the stadium do during those rain delays?

If you watched the Twins’ night game on Saturday night, it misted on and off for most of the game and was even called for an hour long rain delay in the top of the fifth inning.

I was at that game and from my vantage point, the didn’t look too bad. It did look bad on the jumbo screen though. The umpires called the game and the players left the field. As they left the field, security and the groundskeeping crew took the field.

From where we were sitting, we could see the water running down from the upper levels down into the field. We also were sitting in a section where we wouldn’t get wet.

According to my brother Grady, “Oh you guys were way up there, in the cheap seats, huh?” Yes, but it was a good thing because of the stadium overhead was over our seats keeping us dry. We weren’t sure how long the rain delay would last and what we should do during it. We decided to go walk around.

There were quite a few spots inside the stadium that I had never seen before so it was really neat. We stopped by a restaurant called, “The Red Cow,” and of course I thought it was great! It was really cool to walk around because we ended up seeing and visiting with people from Minnesota and South Dakota that we knew! My friend’s brother-in-law was there too! What a small world! Once we got some more food, we went and sat back down in our nice dry seats.

The Twins’ played some different news stories and countdowns from Fox Sports North and the Major League Baseball Network. Most of the people in our section stayed and watched for a while and just hung out.

The most amazing thing about the rain delay was watching the Twins’ groundskeeping crew work. They are so fast and efficient at keeping the infield and pitcher’s mound safe from the rain. It was cool to watch them cover it with a tarp and then it was really neat to watch them uncover everything.

The groundskeeping crew then had to get all the dirt ready in the infield. They even brought some young Twins’ fans on the field as “junior groundskeepers” and they were in charge of taking towels to dry the bases. From the time they took the field to the time the game went back on, it was maybe 10-15 minutes.

It was so amazing! Despite the rain, the game was a lot of fun and I even took my first Metro Train ride and got to see U.S. Bank Stadium. Now if only the Twins would have won that game.

But at least I know what happens at the stadium during the rain.
