75 Years Ago-February 4, 1944

Sells Store

W.H. Deen, who for more than 30 years has been in the furniture and undertaking business in Minneota, sold his store and business to J. C. Rehkamp and Donald Bourgeois of Marshall last week. The new owners assumed management of the business on February 1. Mr. Deen, who came to Minneota 50 years ago, was at one time publisher of The Mascot, becoming a partner of J.P. Byrne in April of 1893. August 1, 1913, he purchased the furniture business from H.E. Anderson. The store was then located in the building now occupied by Carl’s Cafe. Seven years later he moved to the present location. Mr. Bourgeois will be in charge of the store here. He is married and has one child, and plans on moving to Minneota as soon as living quarters can be found.

Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Knutson are the parents of a girl born Tuesday, February 1. A girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Van Leeuwe, Tuesday, February 1. Bernie Cole has accepted a position as teacher at the Marshall high school. Sgt. Leon Krohling was awarded a good conduct medal a few weeks ago. He is stationed at Camp Chafee, Arkansas. Mary Lee was the name given the infant daughter of Mrs. Mary Sumption on Saturday, Jan. 22.

50 Years Ago-February 6, 1969

Moving Day for Dentist

Last Friday was moving day for Dr. C.E. Wastwold and he moved his offices from the second floor of the old bank building to new quarters in the Kompelien building on Main Street. Assisting him with the task of moving equipment was Tom Nomeland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Nomeland.

Engaged

Mr. and Mrs. Norman Larson of Minneota announce the engagement of their daughter, Carla Rae, to Dean Moll, son of Mr., and Mrs. Eldred Moll of Sleepy Eye, Minn.

Wrestlers take victory from Bellingham

Thursday The Minneota high school grapplers rolled up another victory as they beat the wrestling squad from Bellingham last Thursday by a score of 29-16. The Vikes now post a record of seven wins and two losses. Coach VanVooren listed Bill Pennings and Paul Glasser as having been outstanding in their matches.

Cagers defeat Ivanhoe for fourth straight victory

The Minneota basketball squad won their fourth straight game when they beat Ivanhoe 62-52 last Friday night on the local court. The Vikes now hold a 6-0 record in the Camden Conference. Al Geiwitz led the victors with 17 points, Duane Obe and Bruce Ahlschlager each had 14, Ken Byrne had 10.

Locals

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Fonteyn, of St. Paul, are the parents of a five-pound boy, born on Monday, February 3. Mr. and Mrs. Don Hoberg and family of Lake Benton moved to Minneota last Thursday and are living in the former Donald Dero home. Mr. Hoberg is the manager of USS Agri Chemicals, Inc. Mr. and Mrs. Hoberg are the parents of five children.

Susan Schreier to give Senior recital

The Department of Music at Southwest State University announces the Senior Recital of Susan Schreier, mezzo-soprano vocalist from Minneota. The recital will be held this Sunday, February 6th, at 3:00 p.m. at Charter Hall 201. Susan Schreier graduated from Minneota High School in 1974. She is married to John Schreier, who is an employee of Superior Truss, and the couple has four children.

Card players in action

An old fashioned game of rummy was being played at this table on Monday afternoon. Bob Kjorness, Phil Tillemans, Leonard Richards and Sam Severson were having a hot hand, while Carl Gorski and Milo Kern looked on. At another table, pinochle was being played and others sat and chatted during the wintry afternoon. Where was all the action? At The Roundup Office, of course.

Rolbiecki congratulated

Girls' basketball coach Connie Johnson congratulated Jami Rolbiecki on her new school record for most points in a game. Rolbiecki, a junior, scored 32 points on Monday night, breaking Lori Miller’s record of 30 from the 1986-87 season.

Local students nominated for Triple “A” Award

Eric Alleckson and Nicolle Coequyt, seniors at Minneota High School, have been nominated for the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award, Principal Bruce Johnson announced today.
