75 Years Ago-October 29, 1943

Hunter dies

John A. Cihlar of New Prague, Minn., was fatally wounded Oct. 24, when he and group of men from New Prague were hunting six miles north of Minneota. Mr. Cihlar as running after a pheasant he had shot when he fell and the gun he was carrying discharged.

Accidents continue

Three more accidents have occurred in the community the past week, but luckily none were fatal. Twelve-year-old Francis Polejewski fractured his left leg while working on his father’s farm last Friday. Gus VanOverbeke caught his hand in the snapping rollers of his corn picker and received a compound fracture of the second finger of his right hand. William Adams of Taunton sustained a compound fracture of his ring finger while working for the Yellow Medicine highway department.

50 Years Ago-October 31, 1968

FFA Members win money in oats project

Two Minneota high school FFA members, Ronald Meulebroeck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Meulebroeck of Taunton, and Vincent Buysse, son of Mr., and Mrs. Wilfred Buysse brought home nearly $82.00 as a result of oats projects which they conducted this past summer. Winners in the contest were paid a cash award of $1.00 per bushel for each bushel in excess of 75 bushels per acre on one measured acre. Meulebroeck raised 118.9 per acre and Buysse had a total of 113.7 per acre.

Scout overnight trip

Fifteen members of the Minneota boy scout troop, accompanied by Scoutmaster Harold Jackson, left Thursday afternoon and spent the night at “Section 15”, southwest of this village. Here four of the troop received instructions from Jackson on the proper way to raise a tent for the night. They were Eagle Patrol Leader Marc Larson, Brent Larson, Mark Stassen and Wolf Patrol Leader Douglas Jackson.

Dovre-Willgohs

Marriage vows were exchanged between Miss Rita Willgohs and Allan Dovre on Saturday, September 28 at Hope Lutheran Church. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Willgohs of Taunton and the parents of the groom are Mr. and Mrs. Jens L. Dovre of Minneota.

Baptism

Karen Jean Polman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Polman, was baptized on Sunday, Oct. 27, at St. Edward’s Catholic church.

Vikes and Danes Tie

The Minneota and Tyler football teams battled to a 13-13 tie in the annual Dad’s Day Night game played on the local field Tuesday of last week. The Vikings close out the season here with Jasper. Six seniors who will be making their final appearance as MHS gridders are Bruce Ahlschlager, Larry Langsweirdt, Bill Pennings, Joe Tillemans, Bruce VanDenBerghe and Gary Wobbema. Two other seniors have not been in uniform the last two games due to injuries, namely Bill Bourgeois and Bill Merritt.

School in need of repair

Work needs to be done at the Minneota Public School. The main work, the repairing of the roof, is the foremost part of the proposed levy that would raise funds for this project.

Football cheerleaders at work

The Viking football cheerleaders have had a lot to cheer about, and are hoping to continue working through the Playoff season. They are: Carrie Pohlen, Jennifer Flood, Cari Boerboom, Nicolle Coequyt, Becky Vlaminck and DeeAnn DePestel.

Volleyball team places third in Conference

The Junior High Volleyball team from Minneota place third in the Camden Conference Tournament held at the local school on October 16. They are: Shannon Vlaminck, Amber Hennen, Kristi Myhre, Kim Fier, Amanda Verschelde, Kristen Nelson, Sara Gorecki, Chrissi Boulton, Kayla VanDePutte, Nicole Stiklestad, Sara Johnson, Sarah Lundberg, Coach Stephanie Hennen and Jennifer Thostenson.
