75 Years Ago-March 5, 1943

Jeanette’s Beauty shop closed March 1

Miss Jeanette Dero has closed her beauty shop until further notice, because of her inability to secure a manager. Miss Dero expects to leave for Minneapolis soon, while the future plans of Miss Armilla Gau, former manager, are indefinite.

Former Minneotan to join Waves in N. Y.

Miss Vivadale Ousman, who was here a few days last week at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Ousman, left on Sunday for Hunter College in New York City, where she will begin her training in the Women’s Accepted Voluntary Emergency Service. Prior to her enlistment in the WAVES, she was employed in the offices of the University employment bureau in Minneapolis.

BB tournament play this week

The Minneota basketball team was matched against Ruthton on Thursday evening at 9:30 for their first game in the sub-district tournament to be played in the Marshall high school auditorium on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 4, 5, and 6.

Former local teacher enters signal corps

Miss Gerda Petersen, who taught last year in the Minneota Public Schools, has resigned her position as science instructor in Grove City to enter training in the U. S. Signal Corps.

NYA offers free trade schooling

Miss Louella E. Watson of Montevideo, youth personnel field representative of the NYA, was in Minneota Thursday recruiting for the industrial training centers at Glenwood and Shakopee. At these schools, free training for war-time jobs is offered in sheet metal work, machine shop and radio to boys and girls between the ages of 16 and 25. Besides free board and room, $10.80 a month is paid during the training period of two to three months.

50 years Ago-March 7, 1968

MHS Junior installed as State FHA President

Susan Orsen, a Minneota high school junior and daughter of Mrs. Ethelyn Orsen of rural Minneota, was installed as this year’s Minnesota Future Homemakers of America president at ceremonies held in Minneapolis last Friday evening. Oil board hires new manager Harold Jackson, 36, of Montevideo has been hired as the manager of the M-G-T Co-operative Oil Co. of Minneota and will take over his duties on Thursday, March 14.

At bank’s double celebration Friday

Last Friday, the First State Bank of Minneota had a double celebration — the institution’s 65th anniversary and the 40th anniversary of Edward Amundson’s joining the bank staff.

Area men get dairying awards

Anton Fier of rural Taunton and Orville Hennen, who lives near Ghent, received certificates when the annual meeting of the Lyon-Lincoln DHIA was held at Tyler the latter part of February.

25 Years Ago-March 3, 1993

A house built indoors

Work continues at a steady pace at Superior Truss, as they build a regulation sized house in one of their large construction sheds. The shell is being built here in Minneota, and will stand completely finished in the Mall of America in Bloomington.

Local priest celebrates 25th year of service

On Tuesday, March 9, 1993, Father Gerald A. Hillesheim will celebrate his 25th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood. Father Hillesheim currently serves parishes here in Minneota, Ghent and in Taunton. In honor of Father Gerry, the three parishes will be having a Mass of Thanksgiving.

FLA members prepare for annual events

The FLA (Future Leaders of America) members at the high school are preparing for their annual Mid-Winter meeting which will take place in Lake Benton on Friday, March 5. At this event, the STAR (Students Taking Action for Recognition) events will be presented which are based on a wide range of topics.
