Simning Killed in Plane Crash

Ensign Donal H. Simning died in a plane crash while evacuating Navy planes during a hurricane alert at Vero Beach, Florida, on October 18.

Sgt. Hauschild Gets Presidential Citation

Sgt. Hugo H. Hauschild, of Ivanhoe, is a member of a bombardment group which, with its division, has been cited by President Roosevelt for a bombing attack on targets in Germany, January 11, 1944.

Deros Honored on Silver Wedding

A group of relatives and friends surprised Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Dero at their home here Sunday of this week. The occasion was the 25th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Dero.

Sgt. Earl Werner Reported Missing

Mrs. Earl Werner received information Wednesday evening that her husband, a sergeant in the Army Air Force, was reported missing October 20 over Yugoslavia. Mrs. Werner is the former Vola Cope.

Former Minneotans in Cleveland, Ohio Explosions

Three former Minneotans, W. B. Gislason and sons, William and Leonard, were in the area damaged by gas tanks which exploded and fire which followed at Cleveland, Ohio, Friday, October 20.

50 Years Ago-November 6, 1969

Vandals slash teachers tires

Tires on two teachers’ automobiles were slashed last Friday evening (Halloween) Police Officer Alphonse DePestel reports. Four tires on a car belonging to Gerald Olson, high school principal, and one tire on an automobile belonging to James Skarp, public school librarian was slashed.

Firemen called

Members of the Minneota Fire Department were called to the Ed Polejewski farm home late Wednesday evening for a chimney fire.

Schwartz Resigns, Files for Mayor

Harold Schwartz, who was first appointed to serve as councilman in September of 1967, resigned at Monday evening’s meeting. Mr. Schwartz, after the council had accepted his resignation, threw his hat into the political ring and filed for the office of mayor, to succeed Mayor Lawrence Dero, who had stated that he did not intend to seek the office again. Rueben Obe, who served one full three-year term on the council, became an official candidate to succeed himself, as did Leon Ousman, who has served as justice of the peace here for many years.

Finnegan Appointed Council Member

At a special meeting called for that purpose, the village council appointed Edward Finnegan, Sr., to fill out the unexpired term of Harold Schwartz.

25 Years Ago-November 2, 1994

Pickup Truck Fire

A pickup truck owned by M-G-T Co-op Oil Company of Minneota caught fire Monday morning. The truck, which was driven by M-G-T employee Terry Coens, was about two miles west of Minneota and “heading to Minneota” when Terry noticed that white smoke was coming into the truck under the floor boards. He was able to call 911, using the radio which was in the truck.

Students create topography maps

These eighth grade students at St. Edward’s School are working on topography maps this week. The students are finding it very interesting to create mountains, lakes, rivers, and depressions that resemble the earth. They are Julie DeSmet, Angie Guza, Talina Gossen, Glenn Verschelde, Matt Bottelberghe, Ryan Laleman, Beth Heggeseth, Julie Tillemans and Gail Wyffels. Their teacher is Mrs. Mary Ann DeSutter.

These students on the Canby/Minneota Cross Country Team will be participating in the State Meet this Saturday in Northfield, Alyssa Downing, Nancy Loyson, Peter Janiszeski, Nicole Anderson, Ryan Rand.
