75 Years Ago-July 3, 1942

17 File for Offices County Auditor

Benj. Foss reported Wednesday morning that filings in his office for county places has so far totaled 17. L. A. Barnett of Marshall, R. D. Houdersheldt of Marshall, F. W. McLennan of Cottonwood, Earl Hartzzell and Ferdinand Coequyt of Marshall are listed in the race for register of deeds. For sheriff, incumbent Harry B. Croft is challenged by William Murphy of Balaton. Two candidates have filed for county attorney, being C. J. Donnelly, the incumbent, and Z. L. Begin of Marshall. There are no contests in the following: R. N. Anderson, Judge of Probate; Benj. Foss, auditor; Jennie Frost, superintendent of schools; Charles Chapman, treasurer; H. E. Persons, clerk of court and Virgil Johnson, surveyor.

Celebration July 4th

All Lyon county will be interested in the July 4 and 5 celebration at Lyndwood Park on Saturday and Sunday, as nearly every community will be represented during the two days of sports, speaking, music and entertainment. The Minneota baseball club will play against Marshall on July 4th and against Hansonville, on July 5th. Wally Warren of minneota will bring his orchestra to play for the dancing. K. V. Bjornson, former Mascot editor, will address the crowd Sunday afternoon.

50 Years Ago-July 6, 1967

Minneota Firemen win water fight

A team representing the Minneota Fire Department, composed of Robert Alleckson, John Good, James Wambeke and Gene Kockelman of Clarkfield, won top honors in a water fight held at Gary, S. D., Monday evening.

Vlaminck purchases former cafe building

Announcement was made this week by Jerry Vlaminck that he had purchased what is commonly known as the “Corner Cafe” building on First Street from D. J. Mootz. Vlaminck said Wednesday morning that it was his intention to use the building for a cabinet shop and wholesale house for occupancy about August 1st.

Ball of lightning exploded on farm

A ball of lightning about the size of a basketball exploded at the Marvin Weber farm, east of Canby Sunday night, June 18. Weber spotted the intensely glowing ball hovering about 15 feet from the ground as he came out of the garage. Taken by surprise, Weber, intensely watched the “ball lightning” as it disintegrated 25 feet from him. “The explosion was like the discharge of a shotgun,” according to Weber.

Strand was race winner in celebration of 1914

Carl Strand, veteran Minneota mail carrier and secretary-treasurer of the Minneota Businessman’s association for many years, read with fascination last week a Mascot file for 1914 and was particularly interested in an account of a Fourth of July celebration in this village which, the paper said, attracted between seven and eight thousand people. The article also carried names of winners in various youths’ sporting events and Strand was listed as a winner of a “dress race” and received $3.00 for coming in first.

Local student goes to leadership seminar

Nicolle Coequyt, daughter of Leo and Helen Coequyt, has recently returned from the Hugh O’Brian Youth Foundation (HOBY) 1992 Minnesota Leadership Seminar. The seminar was held June 19-21 at the University of St. Thomas.

Gislason’s Hardware undergoing a “remodeling and rearranging”

Greg Litterer of Minneapolis and a store engineer for Hardware Hank, is replacing merchandise on the peg board displays at Gislason’s. The store’s merchandise will be completely rearranged, for the customer’s convenience, when Greg is finished. He informed The Mascot photographer that he has been at the store about three weeks, and should finish this week. Each hardware department has been expanded with additional items.

Jaycees hold sandbox day

Earlier this spring, the Minneota Jaycees held their annual sandbox day when, for a small fee, local children could have their sandboxes refilled with fresh clean sand. Ardeen Tolk Graveling has supplied the truck for the past few years, for which the Jaycees are grateful.

Banjo player coming to town Thursday

Bob Payton will perform in the Minneota Memorial Park this Thursday, July 2nd, at 7:00, as a part of the Music-in-the-Park series.

Invitational golf winners

The Countryside Golf Course was the scene of the annual Ladies Invitational Tournament on Tuesday. Severe weather conditions forced the fifty ladies to leave the course before the 18 holes of golf were completed. Tournament winner was Rita Bot, 1st flight winner Katie Polesky, 2nd flight winner Helen Wands, 3rd flight winner Clare Schroeder, 4th flight winner Diane Drietz and 5th flight winner Den Hanson.
