75 Years Ago-September 8, 1944
Promotion
Mr. and Mrs. Arni Christianson received word on Friday of last week that their son, Robert, had been promoted to captain in France about the middle of August. He is with General Patton’s army.
Return Home
Mr. and Mrs. Martin Amundson have received word from the War Department that their son, Pfc. Henry Amundson, will be back in the states soon. Henry has been awarded the Purple Heart Medal which has three stars on it. Henry has taken part in the African and Italian campaigns.
Personals
Mr. and Mrs. D.M. Kvanbeck are the parent of a girl born on September 2. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Homan are the parents of a boy born on September 6. Mr. and Mrs. Alois VanOverbeke are the parents of a girl born on September 2. A daughter was born to Pvt. And Mrs. Richard Allen at a Marshall hospital on Thursday, August 31.
50 Years Ago-September 11, 1969
Note 50th Anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. Emil DeVos of Taunton observed their 50th wedding anniversary last Sunday when they were honored at an open house held in parlors of the church there. They were married at St. John Cantius Catholic church at Wilno, September 2, 1919. She was the former Hattie Fier. They have two children, Mrs. Bernard VanDenBroeke of Arco and Raymond of Taunton and six grandchildren.
Priest at Ghent Being Transferred
The Mascot received information this week that the priest at Ghent, Rev. John Savage, was being transferred to Darwin, Minn., and that he would be replaced by Rev. Ambrose Siebenand, who has been serving a parish at Morgan.
St. Edward’s Church Changes Service
Announcement was made at St. Edward’s church that the parish would have a mass on Saturday evenings at 7:30. The mass that has usually been held at 6:30 a.m. Sundays would be eliminated on September 21.
Gets Promotion in Germany
Robert C. VanDenBroecke, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cyril VanDenBroecke of rural Minneota, was promoted to sergeant August 1, while serving in Germany.
25 Years Ago-September 7, 1994
One-of-a-kind Boxelder Bug Trophy
Local machinist, Monte Yeo, has gotten into the spirit of Boxelder Bug Days and created an original metal boxelder bug trophy for local parade entrants. The float judged to be the best will take this trophy home with them. Next year, however, the winner will be asked to bring the trophy back so that it can travel on to the next winner.
Entertainment featured at this year’s festival
Entertainment will begin once again with the boxelder bug races, an ironic tradition. There will also be reptiles and a live monkey featured in The Reptile Connection and puppets in Marshallite Jay Schueller’s ventriloquist show. The “dynamic duo” of Bill Holm and Simon Fensom will have a performance, although they have not announced just what it will include.
New staff at St. Edward’s School
Two new people greeted students on the first day of school at St. Edward’s Catholic School here in Minneota. Marcia Vlaminck is the new Secretary at the school and Mr. John Hengel is the fifth grade teacher.
Helping new students
Darren Gislason, Minneota Public Elementary School’s new Administrative Assistant, helped new students find their way around the elementary school on Tuesday morning.
