75 Years Ago July 7, 1944


Miss Irene Schwartz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schwartz became the bride of Orlando Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stone Johnson of Kasson, Minn., in the parsonage of the First English Lutheran church on Sunday. The couple will make their home on the bride-groom’s farm near Minneota.


Three Minneotans will report for induction on July 25th. They are Ordell Duance Bernardy, John Howard Geiwitz, and Ellsworth Lee Hanson. Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Gislason left here on Thursday of last week for Cleveland, Ohio, where they expect to make their home in the future. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Christensen plan on moving to Zumbrota, Minn., by the middle of the month, where they will make their home in the future. Mr. Christenson has accepted a position in the schools there. Their home was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Cyriel DeSmet at an auction. Mr. and Mrs. Garfield Johnson are the parents of a girl born on Friday, June 30. Ed Meger and family moved on Thursday of last week into the house formerly occupied by Maurice VanOverbeke and family. Mr. and Mrs. VanOverbeke and family moved into the house formerly occupied by Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Brown who moved to Northfield, Minn.

50 Years Ago July 10, 1969

Ordained 50 years ago

Rev. E. W.L. Lehne, visitation pastor at Hope Lutheran church in Minneota, was the honored guest Sunday afternoon of members of the congregation at an open house honoring him on the 50th anniversary of his ordination. About 400 attended the open house. He retired from the active ministry in 1961 and has been with Hope Lutheran congregation since 1961.


Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Anderson announce the engagement of their daughter Beverly, to Mr. Gene Bies of Fergus Falls, Minnesota. No wedding date has been set.

17 Firemen finish firemanship course

Members of the Minneota and Taunton Fire Departments “graduated” from the course in firemanship training as provided by the Trade and Industrial Unit of the Vocational Section, State Department of Education. The course consists of 12 hours of instruction and is presented with the cooperation of local school officials. The following received the firemanship “degree”: Eric Heggeseth, Arthur Flemming, Edward Finnegan, Jr., Robert Alleckson, Douglas Marcotte, Douglas Konold, Herbert Magnuson, Robert Windey, Raymond VanDorpe, James Wambeke, Hiller Holien, Ignatius Culshaw, Harvey Rafnson, James Obe, Dale Hachmann, Raymond Olafson and Duane Sarbaum of the Taunton Fire Dept.

3.16 inches rain here in first 8 days of July

While Minneota has received 3.16 inches of rain during the first nine days of the month, other places in the area received much more. Crops on hundreds of acres of land were totally destroyed or badly damaged in a hail storm which hit the area east, south and west of Minneota Tuesday night of last week.

What’s that - a step ladder plant?

No, the step ladder in the photo is not growing in a corn field, regardless of how it looks. The five foot ladder was placed in the corn field to graphically show that the corn, at least in this particular field, is much closer to six feet than it is to knee high, which is how tall the old saying says corn should be by the 4th of July.

Planning trip to Orlando, FL

Jennifer Flood and Mrs. Marlien Lien were making final plans for the upcoming Leadership Conference to be held in Florida. Jennifer is the Minnesota State President Elect of the FHA/FLA Chapter in Minneota, and Mrs. Lien accompanies her as her Advisor and Chaperone.

Annie Kuchera celebrates 90th birthday

Annie Kuchera celebrated her 90th birthday this past weekend with a special party at her home in Taunton.

Sixty years of organ playing

Marian Sarbaum displays the paque that she was given as she completes 60 years of organ playing at Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Taunton.
