75 Years Ago-June 30, 1944

Twin boys born
Twin boys, born to Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Snyder of Burton at the Sanderson Maternity hospital on Monday. They weigh a total of seven pounds and 13 ounces.
Sgt. Westdal wins Air Medal in Pacific
Sgt. Lawrence C. Westdal, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Westdal, marine corps radio man gunner, has been awarded the air medal for bombing Japanese gun positions and ground installations in Solomon islands area.
Local Band to play at celebration
Minneota’s band will be one of the attractions at a big celebrations to be staged at Lyndwood Park the 4th of July, according to Dave Lamphere, manager of that popular resort.
Storm does some damage Monday
A strong wind, followed by a heavy shower of rain, did some damage to trees and gardens here on Monday afternoon of this week. A large number of trees were blown down and branches broken on others. Power lines, telegraph and telephone poles were also knocked down.
New grocery here middle of next month
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Davis, former residents of Hendricks, expect to open grocery store here about the middle of July in the Maurice Dero building, which was formerly occupied by the Johnson cream station on Main street.
50 Years Ago-July 3, 1969
New association names officers
The newly formed Home and School Association of St. Edward’s parish adopted a constitution and voted on bylaws at a meeting which was held Sunday evening. Officers named were: Vincent Bot, president; William Drown, vice president; Mrs. Cletus Lanners, secretary; and Mrs. Jon Guttormsson, treasurer.
Champion Showman
Champion showman at the annual Southwestern Minnesota Region XI Dairy day 4-H and FFA cattle show held at Pipestone, June 21st, was Kris Hennen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Hennen.
Two Champions
Two Champions of the annual Southwestern Minnesota Region XI Dairy day, 4-H and FFA cattle show held at Pipestone, June 21st, are a purebred Jersey calf which was shown by Mary Ann Moorse, winning the Jersey breed championship and the Jersey which was shown by John Moorse, winning the reserve jersey breed championship. Their parents are Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Moorse of Minneota.
His second ‘Three-Wheeler’
Matt Kimpe was as proud as a young man with a first car as he accepted delivery of a new three-wheel vehicle he had purchased from Jerry’s Supply and hobby shop. This is his second vehicle of this type, the first, however, was a rebuilt machine. The 79-year-old retired farmer travels all over in the vehicle. It has a two-speed “transmission” and the basket on the rear can be lifted off.
Locals
This summer it is 91 years since Mr. and Mrs. S.S. Hofteig and children arrived from Iceland to make their home in this community. To commemorate this event about one hundred descendants of these pioneers gathered at the Cecil Hofteig farm in Westerheim township last Sunday. This farm was the original Hofteig homestead and has remained in the family continuously.
25 Years Ago-June 29, 1994
Equipment designed for handicapped
Pat Janiszeski sits near one of her work areas in her home in Minneota. Pat is a victim of cerebral palsy, but has not let that hinder her way of life. She is currently writing a book about her life, with the use of special equipment designed for the handicapped.
Local business changes hands
Gene’s Sporting Goods has officially changed hands. Since May 1st, son Steve has been learning the business and getting a taste of the sporting goods field. Gene DeSutter started the distributor business back in 1964.
Nation marks 50th anniversary of G.I. Bill
Franklin D. Roosevelt signed it into law on June 22, 1944, as World War II waned. A young Navy veteran by the name of George Bush used it. As did a budding young author James Michener. So did actors Clint Eastwood and Paul Newman.
