75 Years Ago- April 28, 1944

Anniversary

Geiwitz and Company, here, this month marked the 25th anniversary of their appointment as Ford dealers. It was in April, 1909, that the local concern signed the contract making them dealers in this territory and during the same month, John Geiwitz drove the first “demonstrator” from Minneapolis to Minneota. The first car the Geiwitz concern sold went to the Johnson brothers, Julius and Charley, living west of Minneota, and a short while later they sold the second to O.H. Werpy.

Simning-Kompelien

Miss Jennell Kompelien, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sever Kompelien, rural Minneota, became the bride of Ensign Donald Simning of Minneapolis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Simning of Minneapolis, at Corpus Christi, Texas, on Saturday, April 15.

Golden Wedding

Mr. and Mrs. Peter Frost celebrated their golden wedding on Tuesday, April 25.

Miss Vivian Heggeseth, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.T. Heggeseth, who reside south of Minneota, has been chosen as 4-H Club Agent for Lyon County of 1944, according to an announcement made by County Agent F.J. Meade this week. Mr. and Mrs. Edmond DeCock are the parents of a girl born on Friday, April 21. Mr. and Mrs. John Wambeke are the parents of a boy born Saturday, April 23. Mr. and Mrs. James McMahon are the parents of a girl born April 24.

50 Years Ago-May 1, 1969

Rotary Club’s “Man of the Year”

Dr. Charles Vandersluis was named the Minneota Rotary Cub’s “Man of the Year” last week.

Langsweirdt Rates High in State Mark

Larry Langsweirdt, entered in the state declamation contest at Richfield high school last Saturday, received a B plus and an A minus for his humorous selection. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerard Langsweirdt of Taunton.

Take over family trucking business

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gorecki announce that their sons, Robert and Dean, have taken over the trucking business that has been operated by them for the past several years. The younger Goreckis will continue to operate the truck line from the family farm west of Minneota.

Gets Honolulu teaching stipend

Miss Sue Claeys, a senior chemistry major at Briar Cliff college, Sioux City, has been awarded a teaching assistantship in chemistry at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu, for 1969-70.

Wins National Awards

John Downing, Minneota, was among the individuals who won awards in national competition at the National Office Education association convention in Kansas City, Missouri. He took second place in machine transcription and is a student at the Canby Area Vocational-Technical School.

25 Years Ago-April 27, 1994

Firemen called to Merland Hancock residence

The Minneota Volunteer Fire Department was called early Saturday evening to the Merland Hancock residence, located at 503 N. Monroe Street. The residence was extensively damaged by smoldering flames, smoke and water.

Music students perform

These junior high students at the public school took part in the band festival at RTR last Friday: Stephanie Johnson, Sarah Schreier, Angela Teigland, Carrie Dalager, Ross Eischens, Scott Anderson, Nicole Anderson, Breanne Larson, Sarah VanMoorlehem, Chris Winter and James Telste.

FLA members have great State trip

Laura DeSmet, Jessica Nuytten, Jennifer Flood and Laurie Anderson all have good memories from the recent FLA State meeting. Jennifer will have much work ahead of her after being elected to the State President-Elect position and DeSmet, Nuytten and Anderson received Call Backs on their STAR events, which means they narrowly missed going to the National event. The entire FLA group came home with awards, trophies, and memories.

Both entrants place at State

The Minneota High School Speech team competed in the State event on Saturday - with both placing in their respective categories, Kayla Ahern placed sixth in Extemporaneous Speaking and Laurie Anderson placed fifth in Original Oratory. The team has been coached all season by Tony Lockhart, Chris Shuckhart and Stephanie Guza.

Wins wrestling trophy

Paul Laleman earned a handsome trophy for his first place finish at the Jaycee State Wrestling Tournament.
