75 Years Ago-April 21, 1944

Mr. and Mrs. Peter Frost will mark fifty years of married life on Thursday of next week. Three men from this locality,Edgar H. Gillund, Robert L. Simpson, and Francis P. Hamerlinck, have been selected for induction in the U. S. Navy and will leave on Tuesday of next week. Lt. Margaret Dovre, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Knute Dovre of this community, is now stationed at A. A. F. Convalescent Center, Fort George W. Wright, Washington. Mr. and Mrs. Jens Dovre are the parents of a boy, born April 15th.

A parcel shower was held in honor of Miss Eileen Cuwick, bride-to-be of Edward Thange, on April 16 in the St. Eloi auditorium.
50 Years Ago-April 24, 1969
Minneota team wins Judging Contest
This team of four Minneota high school FFA members, David Fier, James Myhre, Mike Fier and Kerry Thompson, won first place in the District Nine general livestock judging contest which was held in Morris on April 16th, competing against teams from 15 other schools in the area. As a result it will represent the local chapter and will be competing in the state contest which will be held in conjunction with the state convention, May 4, 5, and 6.
Goes to State Meet
Larry Langsweirdt, Minneota high school senior, received congratulations last week from Principal Gerald Olson on winning the regional declamation contest which was held at Glencoe. Larry won in the humorous division. He will now go to the state contest, which is to be held at the high school in Richfield on Saturday and it will be a busy day for the MHS student for Saturday evening he is to appear in the senior class play. The last time the local school had an entrant in the state declamation contest was in 1959 when Gwen Westdal represented MHS.
At last week’s roundup
These three mothers were among the many who attended the annual pre-school roundup with their youngsters at the public school last week: Mrs. Jon Gunderson and Ronald, Mrs. Robert Bottelberghe and Steven, and Mrs. Ambrose Girard and Randy.
Three new sisters meet with board
Three sisters of Graceville who will be members of the faculty of St. Edward’s school here next term met with the board of education of the parish. They were Sister Martha, Sister Grace and Sister Margaret and they participated with the board in a discussion concerning next year’s operation of the school.
Two students get teaching certificates
Two Minneota college students, Patricia Buysse and Joanne Claeys, were among 17 College of St. Benedict students to receive teaching certificates last week.

Retiring from ambulance squad
Walt Bulander and Eric Bot were given commemorative plaques at last Thursday’s meeting of the ambulance squad in appreciation of the years of service that they had donated to the ambulance squad. Walt had 15 1/2 years and Eric seven years of service.
Speech students have good tournament
These speech team members all made it to the “final round” at the Section Speech Tournament at Canby last Friday. Kayla Ahern and Laurie Anderson placed second in their categories to advance to the State level and Adam Hagen and Eric Alleckson placed third, to give them a chance to participate as 1st Alternates.
Loading groceries for Marshall area Food Shelf
Volunteers from St. Edward’s parish loaded groceries Saturday morning to be donated to the Marshall area Food Shelf. The funds were raised by a “rice bowl collection” at St. Edward’s Catholic Church during the Lenten season. Approximately $1,600.00 was raised, with the groceries being purchased from Finnegan’s Super Valu.
Music students earned top ratings
These students earned top ratings at the recent Small Group Music Contest held at SSU in Marshall, Sheri Tillemans, Ivy Hammerstrom, Laurie Anderson, Kim Tillemans, Laura DeSmet, and Elaine Telste. Directors are Mary Kaye Rabaey for the vocalists and John Voit for the instrumentalists.
