Sept. 21, 1920

Opera House packed
The Opera House was packed to the doors when Professor Caton of Minneapolis addressed people here on the subject of the Babcock Amendment. Mr. Caton said that it was the largest meeting he had addressed since he had opened his speaking campaign. B.B. Gislason, who had been named chairman of the Good Roads Organization for this county, told the audience that the purpose of the meeting was to spread the gospel of good roads and to bring the voters information on the subject of the Babcock Amendment.

On campaign trail
Albert Pfaender of New Ulm, a candidate for District Judge, arrived in Minneota in the interest of his candidacy. Pfaender met and shook hands with many people, He gave a brief talk before heading to his next destination.

Sept. 14, 1945

Minneota bank resources
go over $3,000,000
Resources at the Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Minneota went over the $3,000,000 this week, announced president H.J. Tillemans. That figure is approximately two times the average total resources of banks throughout the state in towns this size.

Tin salvage drive
The drive for tin cans, which has been going on since the start of the war, ends on Sept. 30, according to an announcement from the War Production Board. Persons who have been saving tin cans are asked to turn them in to local salvage depots before the end of the month. The collection of waste paper will continue, though, due to the scarcity of pulpwood.

Threshing finished;
corn crop in doubt
Threshing of small grain in this community is, with the exception of a few small farms, completed in this community with yields going just a little above what had been expected. Corn, which has been a problem crop the past two seasons, still is behind schedule and the yield of this important crop will depend almost entirely on the weather the next few weeks. According to the Minneota Cooperative Reporting Service, the corn crop in the state as of Sept. 1was about two to four weeks behind schedule.

Homecoming queen
candidates announced
Five Minneota High School girls were named candidates for Homecoming queen. They are: Joyce VanMoorlehem, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph VanMoorlehem; Joyce Hamerlinck, daughter of Alphonse Hamerlinck; Ramona Gossen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Gossen; Cynthia Boulton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Boulton; and Robin Pesch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Pesch.

Harvest Festival
celebrates 3rd year
Preparation for the third annual Harvest Festival in Porter at the end of the week were underway. A beef barbecue will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the Porter Hall with the cost $1.50 for adults and 50 cents for those under 12. A kiddie parade, ball game, horse shoes, trap shooting and water fights will be among the activities held. Admission price to attend an evening dance at the Porter Hall with music by Mike Carruth will be 75 cents. No slacks or shorts are allowed.

Big Store specials
The Big Store's weekly specials include: semisweet chocolate chips for 53 cents, 20-pound bag of red potatoes for 79 cents, 4 cans of wax beans for $1, Campbell's tomato soup for 11 cents, and three packages of fig bars for $1.

Vikings, Cottonwood
battle to 14-14 tie
Cottonwood's domination in recent years over Minneota on the football gridiron was halted Friday night as the two elevens battled to a 14-14 tie. Cottonwood led 14-0 at halftime before the Vikings came back to tie the game with a score in the third and fourth quarters. Coach Dale Yost said penalties and mental mistakes led to the first half deficit.

Council names Krohling
to head Police Dept.
The Minneota City Council, at its regular monthly meeting, officially filled the vacancy of the position of Minneota Chief of Police by hiring Lucien Krohling. Mr. Krohling is currently making the move to take up residency in Minneota. Lucien, who had been employed by the City of Mankato Police Department, previously served Minneota as a part-time officer in 1972. The Council hired Mr. Krohling at a salary of $30,000 a year, subject to a six-month probation

Minneota branch
of CMC to expand
The Minneota branch of the Canby Medical Center will expand its service to four days each week beginning Oct. 2. According to Sally Vogt, Clinic Manager of the Minneota branch located in the Madison Avenue Apartment building, will be open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Dr. Hector Aybar and physician assistants Ray Smith and Brian Glasz will provide services.

Boxelder Big Days
royalty selected
Lisa Gilbertson was named Boxelder Big Days queen for 1995, while Nicole Coover and Laurie Anderson were named princesses. The three young ladies will represent our area in future parades and other events. The three seniors were crowned on Saturday before a large crowd on Jefferson Street in downtown Minneota. The coronation was followed by a street dance.

Judging team earns
Reserve Champion
Members of the Lyon County 4-H Consumer Decision Making Judging Team, Senior Division, received Reserve Champion overall and first overall for group process judging out of 27 teams at the Minnesota State Fair. The three team members were Jessica Nuytten and Sharene Gossen of Minneota, and Shannon Tanghe of Marshall. Gossen was 10th overall out of 75 in Individual judging. Gossen was 10th overall out of 75 in Oral Reasons judging.
