100 Years Ago
Sept. 3, 1920

The Doctor is In
Dr. C.E. Eastwood of LeRoy, Minnesota, the doctor who bought out Dr. Pennington, has arrived and too charge of the office here. Dr. Eastwood is a graduate of Northwestern University in Chicago. He is a native to Minnesota and comes with Norwegian stock. He is a pleasant young man and appears to be possessed of many of the qualities that make for success. He holds a diploma from one of the best known institutions in the country.

Deen Takes Over
W.H. Deen has now moved into the store formerly occupied by P.M. Berg on Main Street. This building has been owned by Mr. Deen for a number of years, and this summer he has had it all remodeled and it now presents a very fresh and inviting appearance. Mr. Deen is using both the upstairs and downstairs and has fixed the whole store up especially for the furniture and undertaking business.

County Fair Prizes
The Minneota Domestic Science Department took first prize for its general exhibit at the Lyon County Fair this week. There were many other prizes to individuals of that department for work they had done in sewing. Those who took first prize in sewing were: Louise Anderson, Ella Kindler, and Agnes Rye. Second prizes were awarded to Agnes Rye and Olaf Johnson.

Aug. 31, 1945

Poetry Contest Winner
Mrs. W.H. Evans of Minneota won first place with her poem "Casualty Item" in a contest sponsored by The Moccasin, a magazine published by the League of Minnesota poets, according to an announcement in the fall issue of that publication.

UBC Sale
United Building Centers of Minneota held its Red Tag Sale. Among the items on sale included assorted screwdrivers priced at 2 for 29 cents, 12 x 12 ceiling tiles for 5 cents each, and a 4-foot aluminum step ladder for $4.95.

Killed in Action
Corporal Rowan A. Reinertson, 22, was killed in the crash of a Liberator cargo plane, while landing at Jorhat, India. He was buried with full military honors in the American Military Cemetery. Corporal Reinertson was a member of the Hope congregation and graduated from Minneota High School in 1940. Memorial services were held at Hope Lutheran Church.

50 Years Ago
Sept. 3, 1970

Young Pheasants Released
Around 125 young pheasants were released outside of Minneota by Dale (age 7), Dwayne (12), and David (17) Fier, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Fier, and Dale Hachmann and Harold Jackson. The birds were raised to the age of shifting for themselves at the Fier Farm, after having been received from the Minnesota Department of Fish and Game.

Soldier of the Month
PFC Richard L. Panneck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Panneck of Taunton, was named Soldier of the Month for June at Fort Dix, N.J. Since the presentation, Panneck was promoted to Sp. 4.

Representing Lyon County
Eric Heggeseth, who served on the local school board for 20 years until his retirement this summer, was in attendance at the Minnesota State Fair representing Lyon County. He was a delegate from the county at School Boar Recognition Day.

From Belgium to Minneota
Claire Boucquey of Brasschaat, Belgium, is attending high school in Minneota for the entire term as a member of the senior class. Brasschaat is staying at the home of the Louis Wyffels family. Her father operates a laundry in Belgium.

Community Choir preparing
for Bill Holm Variety Show
The Minneota Community Choir is preparing several selections for the Bill Holm Variety Show. The choir is rehearsing in the Hope Lutheran Church basement. More women are needed to balance out the singing. Gayle VanVooren is directing the Community Choir and has Stacey Voit at the piano for the concert. Holm is working on a schedule for the concert that is expected to be humorous, entertaining and filled with talented people from this area.

New Teachers profiled
Minneota Public School announced the names of the new teachers for the upcoming school year. They are: Krista Brandsoy, Spanish; Janet Boerner, part-time Science teacher; Janet Stram, Media Generalist; Diane Middendorf, Elementary; Richard Blackburn, Language Arts; Chad Johnston, Health and Physical Education; and Scott Hoegh, Elementary.

Banners Brighten Streets
Banners with bright red background and black boxelder bugs are now hanging in the Minneota downtown streets to add to the festival look and Boxelder Bug Days draws closer. The Chamber of Commerce has been talking and working toward banners for several years. The original committee worked very hard to put together a plan. Marcy Brekken volunteered to donate her time and talent for a new design and also did the sewing for the banners. Joe Wambeke volunteered to weld brackets to hold the banners, while Dave Meiners of Minneota Body Shop donated his time to paint them with a durable black auto body paint.

Obe Wins Golf Title
Butch Obe won the Countryside Golf Club Men's Championship Flight, shooting 108 for three rounds. Jim Christianson was second with a 112, followed by Tim Stegner with 113, Doug Spanton with 114, and Jim Rolbiecki with a 116. There were 12 competitors in the Championship Flight. The tournament featured seven flights and 81 golfers competed in all.
