Brittany’s cheat sheet for the fair

Can you believe it? The Lyon County Fair is here! It’s time for rodeos, cotton candy, corn dogs, demolition derbies, malts, live music and blue ribbons.

Along with those blue ribbons comes 4-Hers. Minneota has a long proud tradition with 4-H in Lyon County and this year won’t be any different.

My family and our extended “show family” have been very busy getting their cows, goats, rabbits, chickens and indoor projects ready for the fair. On Monday night, the 4-Hers had their general projects judged. From the looks of things, Minneota was again well represented.

My sister Brooke has her veterinary science project, her fashion revue, and her “interesting” flower exhibits at the fair.

The Westerheim Flashing Stars club has been busy the past few weeks cutting and painting different “emojis” or the little weird face things on your phone. Their club booth is all about the 4-H emojis and they are very proud of the work they did. The sneak peeks of the emojis I saw looked really neat. While you are at the fair, check out the 4-H building.

I’m always amazed at the creativity the 4-Hers have and the projects they come up with! The fair week is a lot of fun, but it is also a whirlwind.

Between my allergies and visiting with people, my voice disappears faster than pizza at the annual 4-H pizza party. No amount of honey, lemon drops and allergy medicine can bring it back. It just takes time.

I do tend to get really proficient in my own version of sign language though. In keeping up with fair weeks of the past, my voice has decided to start disappearing, and the fair has only begun!

So, to help get through the week, I have come up with a cheat sheet.

If you see me at the fair, here are my following responses:

“Yes, I want a Mountain Dew.”

“Yes, I think the camper smells like teenage boys.”

“Are the rabbits fed?”

“No, I do not know the judge.”

“Yes, I think the faces on Brooke’s flower pots are creepy.”

“I think they are crazy, I love (insert animal’s name here), they must have had a bad look at them.”

“Gosh, I hope our crazy Mini Rex behaves.”

“Don’t lose your rabbit keys!”

“Where is the bolt cutter?”

“Yes, I will share a grasshopper malt with you.”

“Why are the cows dirty? Who is supposed to be watching?”

“No, I don’t know where Mom is. Or Dad.”

“No, I haven’t seen Gared, Grady or Brooke.”

“No, I don’t know who that lady is, but she knows who we are.”

“No, I don’t know where your shirt or anyone’s shirt is.”

“You should have looked up who your cow is bred to before.”

“She is bred to a bull. Bahahahaha.”

“4-H is about learning and fun. Are we doing either of those?”

“No, I don’t know where (your pants, shirt, underwear, best friend, phone, camper keys, etc) are.”

“Yes, that kid looks familiar.”

“No, I’m not giving you money.”

“Who does this half drank can of pop belong to?”

“I’m going home to feed calves...bye!”

Thanks for understanding and I hope to see you at the fair!
