Law Change for buying cigarettes

I have received many calls and questions from 18-20-year-olds are wondering if they can still buy and be in possession of cigarettes. With the passage of federal bill H.R. 1865, it is now illegal to sell cigarettes to anyone under the age of 21.

I have seen several retailers posting notices that they are no longer selling cigarettes to those under 21.

I also expect that the state legislative body will quickly make changes to the state statute so as to match the federal law with the addition of making it illegal for those under 21 to buy, be in possession of, or provide cigarettes to those under the age of 21.

My advice going forward — Don't sell cigarettes to anyone under 21. Don't buy cigarettes for anyone under 21.

If you are 18-20 and are smoking, contact your health care provider for help to quit smoking.
