Mayors often get excited at city council meetings. This one, Tony Esping of Minneota, watched his son Nicholas wrestle for the Minneota Vikings at the state tournament last weekend. Esping seemed to get himself tied into knots over the action on the mat. See special edition for details. Staff Photo by Byron Higgin. |

She 'Reached for the Stars' |
|
By Gayle VanVooren Mascot Editor
Sometimes you have to “Reach for the Stars” if you want to become the best. Minneota’s Manjit Harrison has done just that as an award-winning Edu-cational Consultant for Usborne Books & More. Harrison just concluded a very successful “Reach for the Stars” reading program at the Minneota Elementary School and last Monday kicked off a like program at St. Edward’s. She’s a whirlwind of activity as a wife, mother of five, a Christian who believes in what she is doing and she is now an award-winner. “Reach for the Stars is the program that I work with the most,” said Harrison. “Reach for the Stars is trying to take reluctant readers and make them good readers. Kids make a positive choice when they enter this program.” In 2009, Manjit Harrison had the thrill of being named the number one top Educational Consultant in the nation with the Reach for the Stars program. She says she has “developed the program to fit the school’s needs”. And that has been a big bonus for the students, the school, and ultimately the company she works for.

Former Minneota man arrested for murder |

By Byron Higgin Mascot Publisher
A former Minneota man, 30-year-old Shane Hawkins, now of Chippewa Falls, WI, has been arrested for the murder of a 17-year-old Eau Claire, WI boy. Hawkins, who lived in Minneota for a couple of years, was charged March 9 with first degree intentional homicide of Jason Grau. Chippewa County District Attorney Jon Theisen filed the report and said Hawkins was being held on $500,000 bond. He apparently has confessed to the murder of 17-year-old Jason Grau of Eau Claire, WI. “Based on evidence found (at his residence), we have determined Jason was murdered at that site by Hawkins,” said Chippewa Falls Interim Chief of Police John Lidell. Grau died of multiple stab wounds, according to Lidell. Grau’s body was found by the north bank of the Chippewa River.
